Everything you need to know about borrowing books, renewals, reservations, and fines at the Dr. Al-Sumait Library.

Library Loan Types

All registered members may borrow books by presenting their university ID at the circulation desk

Long Loan
2 Weeks

Books not in high demand or with relatively abundant copies. Can be renewed if no holds exist.

Renewable · Up to 3 renewals
Short Loan
3 Hours

High-demand course books placed in the short loan section to maximize usage across more users.

Overnight available · Return by 9am
Overnight Loan
Next Morning

Short loan books borrowed not earlier than 2 hours before closing. Return within 1 hour of opening.

No renewal for overnight loans

Borrowing Process

Search OPAC
Go to lib.umma.ac.ke and search for your book by title, author, subject or ISBN.

Locate on Shelf
Note the call number from OPAC and find the book on the shelves. Shelf guides are on each bookcase.

🪪 Present ID
Bring the book and your university ID card to the circulation desk.

Check Out
Staff will stamp the due date and discharge the book through the decoding system.

Return on Time
Return on or before the due date. Late returns attract overdue fines.

Returning Books

Present returned books to the circulation desk. Staff will check the item in through the encoding equipment and cancel the due date on the date label. Always keep your receipt until the item is cleared from your account.

Fines & Charges

Overdue Fines
Charged for each day a borrowed item is not returned after the due date. Pay via the official Umma University Paybill number.
Lost Books
Replaced at market value plus 10% administrative charge, or with the current edition (not more than 5 years old).
Damage
Users responsible for damage will be required to replace the item or pay for repair/rebinding.

All library charges paid via the official Umma University Paybill number provided at the circulation desk.
