Rules & Regulations

All library users are required to familiarize themselves with and abide by these rules and regulations.

General Rules

  • 1. Persons who wish to use the library must be registered members and should familiarize themselves with and abide by the library rules and regulations.
  • 2. Your University ID card is also your library card. Always show proof of membership before entering the library.
  • 3. Briefcases, bags, overcoats, hats etc., should be placed in the Left Luggage Area. However, the university will not take responsibility for loss or damage of personal property.
  • 4. Order and silence must be maintained in the library at all times.
  • 5. Respect library resources, equipment and facilities. The library treats theft, attempted theft, wilful mutilation or defacement of library materials or property as an offence. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against the offender.
  • 6. Observe restrictions on noise, food, drink and cell phone use.
  • 7. Computers are provided for research and learning purposes only. Any attempt to deliberately tamper with the configuration of library workstations is prohibited.
  • 8. Treat library staff and other users courteously.

Loan Periods

Undergraduate Students 2 items 2 weeks
Academic Staff & Postgraduate Students 4 items 1 month
Non-Teaching Staff 2 items 2 weeks

Circulation Services

  • 1. A valid library card must be presented in order to borrow materials. The person named on the card is responsible for all library transactions made with the card. Loss or theft of a card must be reported immediately to Circulation staff to prevent unauthorised use.
  • 2. Only registered members are allowed to borrow information resources.
  • 3. No books or other resources shall be removed from the library without being appropriately issued.
  • 4. Any item loaned to a user may not be transferred to another person. The loaned item remains the responsibility of the borrower until it is appropriately returned to the library.

Fines

Borrowed items not returned on the due date will attract overdue fines as indicated below. Failure by any user to pay fines or other charges may result in suspension of borrowing privileges and/or exclusion from the library.

Long Loan Kshs 10/= per day overdue
Short Loan Kshs 10/= per hour overdue

All fines and charges are payable via the official Umma University Paybill number. Ask at the circulation desk for details.

Clearance

All registered library members must clear with the University Library at the expiry of their membership. Members must return all borrowed materials to the library before they leave, withdraw or resign — regardless of due dates.

Final year students must clear with the library before graduation. Staff separating from the university must also clear with the library before receiving their final dues.
