Services

The library offers several services as listed below

1. reprographic services

Umma University offers photocopying service in all libraries at an affordable.

2. Internet Workstations and WIFI

All libraries have computer workstations that offer access to the Electronic Library and the Internet. All workstations are available to Library users on a first-come-first-served basis. Wireless LAN is available in the Library for accessing the Internet with your own mobile devices.

3. Circulation

Long Loan

Long loan books are those that are not on very high demand and/or a book title which has relatively abundant number of copies. The maximum number of books issued out per a particular patron from loan to different categories of users and the duration is determined from time to time. All borrowed print books and other physical information materials shall be stamped a date to indicate when the user is expected to return them.

 Short loan

Books on high demand shall be placed in the short loan section to be borrowed for three hours. The University Librarian can however vary loan period for a short loan book upon written request from a user or as dictated by needs. The aim of short loan is to maximize the usage of such books with emphasis on ensuring circulation of the item to a larger number of the users.

Overnight Loan

Books on short loan can be borrowed overnight to be returned the next day at the opening of the Library. Books on short loan will be borrowed overnight not earlier than two hours to the closing time of the library and returned within one of following day upon opening of the library.

 Book Loans to Part-time Lecturers

External part-time lecturers shall not be allowed to personally borrow books from the library. They can only borrow books through full-time faculty Staff in respective schools.

Borrowing

Umma University Library users must have the university’s ID card in order to access the library and borrow materials. A lost ID card must be reported immediately and replaced. A book once borrowed must be returned on (or before) the date stamped on the Due Date slip in the book except when renewed. A fine of Ksh. 5 per day is charged for late return of a book or failure to renew on time. (See user category and borrowing duration)

NB: Students and staff of the Umma university are required to have the ID cards while borrowing Library materials. Circulating materials are issued at the Circulation desk by a library staff. Library users can return their loan items to the Circulation .

Overdue and Losses

Borrowers are responsible for returning their loans on or before the due date. Late return of Library materials is subject to an overdue fine of Ksh 5/day/book for the long loan book and Ksh 5/day/ for the reserve books. For lost or damaged items, borrowers are liable and are required to purchase the latest edition of the lost book.

Renewals

A book can only be renewed twice either online via accessing Umma University library website or presenting the copy to the circulation desk in person. However, this is only possible when the account has no overdue fines accrued. Library materials cannot be renewed if:
i. The items concerned are overdue OR
ii. Maximum renewal limit has been reached OR
iii. Items are being reserved by other users

4. Reference services

Information Desk is located at the circulation desk or visit the library reference librarian for assistance.

Reference includes the following range of activities:

 assisting patrons to locate information materials in the library, answering general questions about knowledge in various subject areas
 We provide instruction/training on how to access, retrieve and apply scholarly information appropriately in academic work
 We assist patrons in retrieving exhaustive literature on the subject of your research needs from databases
 Provide with tools for retrieving relevant books and journals for research and reading from the library: e.g. catalogues and indexes, bibliographies.
 Providing access to wide range of information sources (printed books and journals, e-books and e-journals, theses and dissertations, newspapers to fulfill your research needs in different disciplines

Inter-library loan services

 Any eligible Umma University library patron can borrow library materials through interlibrary loan request. The user should fill an inter-library loan request form and submit it to the Circulation Librarian for processing.
 The Umma University Library does not accept responsibility for any reading materials a borrower borrows from another library.
 Any library patron who fails to return a reading material borrowed on the inter-library basis by its due date forfeits all his/her borrowing privileges. The same patron is subject to the rules, procedures and regulations of the lending institution.

5. Research services

This provides Umma students, staff and lecturer’s quick access to information and tools to plan, conduct, and disseminate their work. This will involve:-

·         Search tools Discover and access library and archival materials, data, and e-resources beyond the library catalogue.

·         Specialists Advanced research assistance in dozens of subject areas.

·         Topic guides Library resources selected by subject specialists to focus your research on a topic.
